Anjou, the land where history comes to life

A land of history and relaxation where the famous “sweetness of Anjou” (douceur angevine) is not an empty phrase: you will enjoy there a real “Art de vivre”.

Anjou is the land with 1,200 castles and manors. “Sur la piste de l’enfant Roy” (following the King child’s trail) is a game about the historical, natural and cultural patrimony in which you can discover 30 sites in a playful manner.

Anjou has been the garden of France, first ranking in horticulture and botany from the 15th century with the Duke of Anjou to the modern “Parc du Végétal”.

Anjou is the time of festivities in its natural sceneries full of authenticity: castles, abbeys, historical residences, chapels, villages with character, gardens, rivers, country-sides, forests and royal river. All of them are favourable to any form of arts and traditions of which the “boule de fort” is a living curiosity.

Anjou is the land of vineyards. King René would say: “three wines in my storeroom – Anjou, Lorraine and Provence – the best one is my first one”. Nowadays, many people agree with him. Anjou is the third wine-producing region of France, a terroir with a wide range of colours and flavours.

Anjou is the land with 4,000 km of waterways, favourable to reverie, fishing and sports. Do not forget that the Loir was “the Muse” of the Pleiade, a group of French Renaissance poets.

Anjou is the land of horses. In Saumur, the “Cadre Noir” was created in the 18th century; it is now the cavalry school. In the Haut-Anjou area, the national stud farm of Le Lion d’Angers is the scene of the Equitonales and many other events. Many horse clubs allow you to ride for nice pony treks in the countryside.

Anjou is the land where Angers-Loire Airport welcomes visitors, whether they are on board an Airbus A320 or an ultralight, or travelling low cost. Nearby, the fascinating Regional Museum of Air is really worth seeing.

Anjou is the land of discoveries that are coloured, flavourful, scented, palatable, decorative and instructive. So you can leave with nice presents and souvenirs.
